About Downtown Austin
Located just south of the University of Texas campus, Downtown Austin is an eclectic commercial and residential area. This unique neighborhood encompasses several different districts, each with a unique feel all its own. From the historic structures lining Congress Avenue to the vibrant entertainment scene along Sixth Street, the heart of Austin has something to offer everyone.
First established in the 1830's, Downtown Austin was the initial area developed within the state's capital. The city has since grown to surround this original area. Because of this history, Downtown Austin is still the principal government district in the city. The Texas State Capitol sits prominently against the backdrop of the local area, with an assortment of other government buildings dotted throughout the neighborhood.
Much like other areas of the capital city, Downtown Austin embraces the local artistic community. This portion of the city is home to several different arts institutions, including the Paramount Theater, one of the community's most famous landmarks. The theater has served the public from the early 20th century, and still features popular films on a regular basis. Other artistic institutions include the Austin Museum of Art, which is primarily used to exhibit artwork from local residents.
Many are drawn to Downtown Austin for its energetic entertainment options. Music and film festivals are common in Downtown Austin, including the celebrated South by Southwest event held each spring. Downtown Austin has gone through many periods of growth and recession, with these events serving as a way to bring new life back into the community. The Pecan Street Festival is another popular event, featuring artisans, entertainers, and vendors that hail from across the state.
Reaching Downtown Austin is easy, either by public transit or private transportation. The Capital MetroRail commuter system provides transport to the suburbs of the city, with the Downtown stop giving easy access to the city's heart. Bus service is also provided to Downtown Austin, allowing those without access to a car to visit the city center. The Downtown area's positioning on Interstate 35 also makes it ideally situated for those arriving from other cities, such as Dallas, Waco, and San Antonio.
